General Information

The ruins of Finchale (pronounced Fink-le) have stood in the meander of the river Wear for hundreds of years and the surrounding scenery and picturesque sights and views make the caravan park, which overlooks the Abbey quite unique.

Finchale is located in the North East of England approximately four miles from the centre of the historic city of Durham. Please see the Location page for a map showing our exact location and directions showing how to find us.

The park has been with the current owners since 1951 and with the next generation of the family involved the business is going from strength to strength and will hopefully be with the family for a long time to come!

The adult only touring park is open all year around and has been awarded four stars after an inspection on behalf of the Northumbria tourist. The park is also a member of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association.

We have been awarded a Gold David Bellamy Conservation award in recognition that the park is managed in a responsible and sustainable way, meeting stringent criteria with regard to saving water and energy, recycling, eco-friendly landscaping, promoting local transport and protecting wildlife and wildflowers.

To further develop the wildflowers and support the wildlife on our park we have developed a wildflower dog walking area. As well as promoting wildlife we hope this area will become a favourite with dog walkers to enjoy a stroll and take in some lovely fresh country air although we’d like to encourage all of our dog owners to act responsibly, keep all dogs on a lead and clean up after their dogs and dispose of any mess accordingly in bins provided, bags are available from reception on request.

Here the park resident guinea fowl are enjoying the grass seed heads.

An apple orchard was planted in 2011 and while the trees are still young they are already providing a good source of nectar for the parks bees providing us with beautiful honey which can be purchased from the park shop.

The park shop opens daily and is perfect for a quick snack or icecream.

The shop also has a small cafe which sells a range of snacks, lovely coffee & hot chocolate and homemade cakes and scones.
